Applique quilts have long been used all over the world as a way to embellish garments, decorative items for homes, bags, quilts, blankets. The French word applique means applied. Applique motifs are cut from one or more fabrics and are laid on top of a larger background fabric. They grew in popularity in Virginia due to the warmer climate and less of a need for bedcovers. However, overtime, they became the “elegant” quilts, which took extra care and time to make. This exhibit will highlight the use of applique in a variety of quilts throughout history. Come visit this exhibit and explore the world of applique.
This exhibit is sponsored in part by the Tidewaters Quilter's Guild.
