In this class, students will learn the technique of foundation piecing. The miniature Log Cabin blocks will finish at 3” with strips of 1⁄4”. Don’t be intimidated by the small scale; students always report that it was much easier than they thought it would be. The class also includes information about printers/papers/other specialty materials and Electric Quilt software. There is also discussion about quilting/finishing techniques that work well with this size of blocks.  Class length is approximately 3 hours, with a maximum of 12 students.

Supply list:

  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Scissors for cutting fabric, smaller are better
  • Schmetz Microtex needles work well, but any small (size 11 or 10) needle is suitable
  • Lightweight cotton thread that blends with your fabrics (50 weight or finer)
  • 8-10 WOF strips, 1” wide, sorted into lights and darks. Small scale prints, tone on tones, and solids work especially well
  • Think about using a contrasting fabric for the very center of your squares. Bright colors work well here, and only a small amount is needed.
  • Open toe foot
  • Rotary cutter/ruler
  • A small paper bag or something similar is recommended to catch all of the little fabric trimmings
  • Optional: mini iron and pressing mat

Foundations will be supplied. The product that I prefer is Foundation Stuff by George Siciliano, plenty of sample patterns will be provided.
